Glyph Weaver's Games
A downloadable game
These project started as a mini-game to drop into a fantasy RPG campaign and has grown into a 48 card custom deck, a custom circular board and 5 distinct games (so far).
The core part of this physical game is a 48 card deck, each card has 9 glyphs on it with a total of 81 different Glyphs. The core concept was an evolution of the mechanic behind spot-it/dobble but with a twist. Every card has 1 Glyph in common with 46 cards in the deck BUT every card is paired with 1 nemesis card that has no Glyphs in common. This is a core mechanic for Game 1.
The 5 games I have developed for this deck and game board are:
- GAME 1: Connect or break: The original game idea behind the project. Plays very similar to spot-it/dobble but with the extra stress of very occasionally that nagging feeling that there are no matching symbols is correct and could win you the game.
- GAME 2: Glyph-ingo: This turns each card into a mini-bingo card to encourage Glyph interpretation and close listening to a story. Ideal for playing with kids to make story time more interactive.
- GAME 3: A collected legend: This is a collective story telling mechanism based on how your cards might randomly connect.
- GAME 4: Glyph-board: This is an abstract strategy game for 2-6 players. It starts with some simple decisions but quickly becomes cut-throat. Alternatively you can turn this into a dexterity game based on playing Tiddlywinks.
- GAME 5: Role Playing Glyphs: This is a visual driven RPG system designed for one-shots. Mechanically as the game progresses your options get less and less and similar to Dread. Your characters eventual failure and death is inevitable if you don't work fast as a team.
Of these games GAME 1 & 4 don't require any visual interpretation exploring metaphor and symbolism. But the other 3 require players to consider both the direct meaning of the Glyphs and creative interpretation. For example, a ⚓ could refer to an anchor, ships at sea or the anchoring core belief of a character.
This project is still a WIP as I am testing these 5 games with different groups and rules might be tweaked and reviewed. The Glyphs are all public domain, mostly from RPG-Awesome. No AI was used in this game. All feedback is welcome.
